I had never heard of this, but he says he buys "apple cider vinegar capsules", and takes them everyday! So, I decided to do some research on this, and found that there is a HUGE homeopathic history of this amazing vinegar that most of us already have in our pantries, to use for: pickling, salad dressings, marinades, etc.! I know there have always been many uses for vinegar in general, (such as cleaning, antiseptic, skin/ beauty uses, etc.), but I truly didn't realize the large scope of how awesome this stuff really is for your overall health and well-being! How does the old saying go? "An apple a day keeps the doctor away."
So, what exactly is "apple cider vinegar"? Well, it's obviously made from apples! Specifically, the process involves the pressing of apples to extract the juice. The juice then goes through two fermentation processes. In the first process, yeast and bacteria are added- turning the sugars into alcohol. (Which would essentially be a "hard cider".) In the second process, the alcohol is converted into vinegar by an acetic acid- forming bacteria. (It usually involves simply being exposed to oxygen.) It is this acetic and malic acid that give the vinegar it's sour taste. There are also two kinds of apple cider vinegar: unpasteurized (organic)- which contains mother vinegar (slightly congealed and cobweb- like appearance), and pasteurized (diluted & filtered)- which is what you primarily find on store shelves.
When was this liquid invented? We'll never know the exact answer to that question since vinegar in general, has been documented in history since about 5,000 BC during the time of the Babylonians! It was even mentioned in both the New and Old testaments of the Bible! Throughout the centuries, different cultures, and countries, vinegar has been used as: medicine, prevention of disease and sickness, antiseptic for killing bacteria in drinking water and for cleansing wounds (which was widely used during the Civil War & WWI), and for strength of military, (specifically the Japanese Samurais and Roman soldiers.)
Although there is a lot of conflicting information regarding the "weight loss" abilities of drinking apple cider vinegar on a regular basis, there is mass of history to back up the medicinal uses of this liquid!
Because of it's acidic make-up, it does make it excellent for reducing inflammation in general, and is known to be effective for easing: sore throats, cold & flu symptoms, migraine headaches, joint pain/ arthritis, infections, allergies, cancer, nausea & digestive issues, asthma, etc. It is also helps to control blood pressure, lower cholesterol, help with your circulatory system, helps to detoxify, and regulates your ph balance in the body. There has also been some evidence to suggest that it is very beneficial for preventing and treating Type 2 Diabetes when taken on a regular basis. And did I mention how beneficial this is for your skin and hair? (Excellent for beauty as well! It would be diluted in a bath in combination with baking soda & Epsom salts to detoxify and soften the skin, and is known to condition and remove build-up on hair when used as a rinse.)
I do want to clarify that by taking ACV on a regular basis does not mean it's a CURE for all of the ailments listed!! If you have ANY kind of disease, condition, illness, and/ or are currently on medications of any kind, I would most certainly advise you to speak to your physician before using this for medicinal purposes!!
And don't ever drink vinegar straight!! ***It is an acid, and will damage your teeth, mouth, and esophagus if you don't mix it with another liquid.
The best way to take it in a non-capsule form, is to look for the unpasteurized product. (It may look a bit scary, but more healthy!) Or, you could also just buy the standard diluted product available on most store shelves! Take about 1-2 T. ACV and mix with a cup (at least 8oz.) of water, juice, tea, and/or 1 T. honey. If adding to hot tea, wait until the tea is warm, (not really hot), before adding the vinegar. (Otherwise, some of the properties will be destroyed, and it won't be as effective!)
Are you up for the ACV challenge this new year? I am!!!
***If you are willing to try it, post your comments here with any weight-loss, or medical related results!
Cheers to health!
