Perhaps you have seen this unsightly citrus fruit recently in the produce section of your local grocer. It's a bit larger than a grapefruit, the outer skin is rather rough and bumpy, and the color is primarily greenish- yellow. May not be the prettiest fruit, but this crazy hybrid citrus fruit happens to be the juiciest of the citrus's! I am talking today about Ugli fruit (Jamaican tangelo)- which hails from Jamaica. It was discovered growing in the wild on the island of Jamaica roughly 80 years ago. Only in recent decades has this fruit made it's way to our country in local markets, (as well as Europe, Mexico, and the Caribbean), and is more readily available during the months of December- April. Unlike many other citrus fruits, this particular one is primarily only grown in Jamaica, and exported!! So, what the heck is it exactly, and what does it taste like?
Well, it's basically a cross breed of the grapefruit, tangerine, and orange, and is considered a tangelo! (Yikes! No wonder it's so weird looking!) Now, as far as taste goes, it's not as bitter as a grapefruit, but a bit more sour than an orange, and has a more mild taste like a tangerine- really sweet and incredibly juicy!!
The big question is nutrition. We all know how healthy citrus fruits are in general, so does Ugli fruit have much of the same properties? YES! In fact, this is a MUST TRY fruit, (even though it's pricier than the oranges and grapefruits), this isn't a fruit you can obtain all-year round like the other fruits, so try it before it's gone!
