Yield: 1 sandwich
2 slices of Rye Bread
Butter or margarine
about 2 t. of Apple Fig Butter (can use store-bought Apple Butter as well)
2 slices of Smoked Gouda
3-4 slices of ham (turkey or chicken)
2-4T. of Braised Red Cabbage (can use store-bought as well)
Grill pan, griddle, or Panini Press
1) Heat up your pan on medium heat. On one side of each slice of bread, spread (lightly) the butter or margarine. Place each slice, butter-side down, on a clean plate or work surface.
2) On the other side of each slice, spread a thin layer of the apple butter, then place a slice of Gouda on top of the apple butter, (1 piece of cheese per slice.) ***By placing the cheese directly on the underside of each slice, this allows for the cheese to melt evenly!
On one half only, place the ham, and then top with the red cabbage. Take the other slice of bread, (with Gouda slice), and place on top of the red cabbage. (The buttered side should be on top, with Gouda on top of cabbage!)
Sorry if I've confused you!! (Refer to the pic above for reference if need be.)
3) Place the sandwich, butter side down, on the pan, or in the Press. If you are using a grill pan or griddle, cook the sandwich for 2-4 min. per side. After flipping, take a heavy saucer, and place directly on top of sandwich to press down. (This will allow the ham, cheese, and cabbage mixture to heat up more efficiently when pressed down!)
4) Remove from the heat, cut in half, and serve with some fresh fruit, a nice green salad, or a hot cup of soup!!!
